Our Story

petall poeetryis-vn began in a modest studio on Queen Street East, born from a simple belief that flowers communicate what words sometimes cannot. Founded by Sarah Chen, a horticulturist and former botanical illustrator, our shop emerged from years of observing how people interact with plants and the emotions that blooms can convey.

Sarah spent her early career documenting rare species for conservation projects across Canada. During those field studies, she witnessed the intricate relationships between pollinators, native flora, and seasonal cycles. This experience shaped her understanding that meaningful floral work requires respect for natural processes and regional ecosystems.

In 2018, after completing advanced training in floral design and sustainable horticulture practices, Sarah opened petall poeetryis-vn with a commitment to partnering with local growers who share her environmental values. The shop's name reflects the dual nature of our work: the precise technical knowledge required to properly condition and arrange flowers, combined with the creative expression that transforms stems into meaningful compositions.

Today, our team includes three designers trained in both classical and contemporary floral techniques. We maintain relationships with seven regional farms that practice responsible cultivation, allowing us to offer arrangements featuring blooms grown within a 100-kilometer radius throughout most of the year. For specialty requests requiring imported flowers, we work with suppliers committed to ethical labor practices and environmental certifications.

Our Ottawa location serves as both retail space and design studio. The preparation area uses climate control systems that extend flower life while minimizing energy consumption. We compost organic waste through a partnership with a local urban farm, and all our packaging materials are either recyclable or biodegradable.

Our Approach to Quality

Sourcing Standards

We evaluate growers based on their cultivation methods, water management practices, and treatment of workers. Our regional partnerships allow us to visit farms, understand their operations, and ensure alignment with our quality expectations. Each shipment undergoes inspection for pest damage, proper hydration, and appropriate harvesting stages.

Conditioning Protocols

Upon arrival, flowers receive immediate processing: recut stems, removal of foliage that would sit below water lines, and placement in temperature-controlled hydration solutions. Different species require specific treatments. Roses benefit from warm water conditioning, while tulips need cold storage to prevent premature opening. These protocols extend vase life significantly.

Design Philosophy

Our designers balance color theory, textural variety, and structural composition while honoring each flower's natural form. We avoid forcing blooms into unnatural shapes or positions. Instead, arrangements showcase inherent beauty through thoughtful placement and complementary pairings. Client consultations inform our understanding of preferences, allowing for personalized designs within seasonal parameters.

Delivery Care

Arrangements travel in climate-controlled vehicles equipped with secure positioning systems to prevent tipping or shifting during transport. Delivery staff receive training in proper handling techniques and customer interaction protocols. For event work, our team coordinates with venue staff to ensure optimal placement and immediate water access for installations.

Subscription clients receive personalized attention as we learn your tastes and adjust accordingly. Event clients benefit from detailed planning sessions and ongoing coordination.

Continuous Learning

Our team participates in ongoing education through workshops, industry conferences, and direct mentorship with master florists. We study botanical science, color theory, design history, and emerging sustainability practices. This commitment to learning ensures our work reflects both technical excellence and contemporary design awareness.

Community Engagement

We contribute to Ottawa's cultural landscape through partnerships with local organizations. Our seasonal workshops teach basic floral design and plant care to community members. We donate arrangements to senior centers and support local arts initiatives. These activities strengthen our connection to the neighborhoods we serve.
